UD Data Sources

Listed below are data summaries that can be used by departments for planning purposes.  Some of the files contain historical data over time (e.g. enrollment, degrees conferred, and student credit hours) while others contain information from the most recent term available (e.g. student demographics).  Some of the tables contain university totals; others contain totals by division or major.  Data for individual departments are also provided.

Following the section on institutional data is a section on surveys conducted at the university level.  Included are results of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), as well as other surveys such as the graduating student survey, Catholic and Marianist Philosophy of Education Survey, and Diversity Climate Audit.

If you are looking for information not found on this website, or if you experience difficulties using this site please contact Elise Bernal, institutional researcher for academics.

Institutional data:

The University of Dayton online factbook provides a variety of information on students, faculty, and programs.  This information is maintained by UD's director of institutional reporting.  The factbook contains information related to enrollment, class sizes, student credit hours, degrees awarded, staffing levels, tuition, endowment, and alumni characteristics.

University-level survey results:

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a survey of first-year and senior students conducted annually by the Indiana University Bloomington Center for Postsecondary Research, measuring students' involvement in programs and activities that help them succeed in college. Data can be benchmarked and used by institutions to identify aspects of the undergraduate experience, inside and outside the classroom, that can be improved through changes in policies and practices more consistent with good practices in undergraduate education.

Hundreds of universities across the United States participate in the NSSE every year, allowing us to compare the responses of our students with those from other similar institutions.  UD has chosen to participate in the NSSE surveys every three years, which gives us the opportunity to compare responses of students during their first year at UD and those same students during their senior year to see how the students’ habits and attitudes change between those years.  This interval between surveys also gives us time to review the results, make changes if necessary, allow time for the changes to take effect, then monitor the results of the changes. Results of the surveys in which UD participated are listed here:  NSSE

Graduating Student Survey - Spring 2008

All students, undergraduate and graduate, planning to graduate in May or August are asked to provide UD with feedback on various aspects of their educational experience and to indicate their immediate plans after graduation.  Students rate their satisfaction with areas relating to academics, student services, and overall education.  They provide comments on whether or not they would recommend UD to others, as well as things they would change about their experience at UD.

The Graduating Student Survey is coordinated by the institutional researcher for academics in the provost's office.  In addition to compiling a general report of overall findings that is distributed to everyone on campus, the institutional researcher breaks down the findings by major and distributes those findings to the corresponding academic deans and assessment coordinators.

Findings of the Graduating Student Survey are used by the schools to identify areas of strength and possible areas of concern within their programs. The schools add these results to their other assessment data, helping them draw a more complete picture of their students and programs.

Catholic and Marianist Philosophy of Education Survey - Fall 2006

The University of Dayton's board of trustees is committed to putting into practice the Catholic and Marianist philosophy of education. Under the guidance of its mission and identity committee, the board of trustees conducted a survey to determine how well we understand and live that philosophy. That committee was made up of trustees, faculty, staff and students.

The Catholic and Marianist Philosophy of Education Survey Baseline Report, which will be repeated in three years, offers a ''state of the mission." We hope the study will spur campus-wide conversations about ways we can nurture and strengthen our Catholic and Marianist identity. That is our niche in higher education.

Organizational Effectiveness Survey - Spring 2001

The University of Dayton conducted a survey of all employees for feedback on how well UD was meeting its goal of building a strong campus community around the mission and goals of Vision 2005.  Employees were asked about their experiences and observations at UD and the attitudes and opinions they formed based on their experience.

Diversity Climate Audit

- faculty, Spring 1998

- undergraduate students, Spring 1998

- faculty & staff, Fall 2004

The University community periodically completes a Diversity Climate Audit to help us better understand the diversity climate at UD from a number of different perspectives. The Audit provides us with a road map as to where we need to move in order to be a community leader in diversity and inclusion.

Student Government Association Student Feedback Survey - Fall 2007

The University of Dayton’s SGA Research and Development Team surveyed the student body to ask their opinions on important student issues.

International Student Experience Survey -

Summer 2007: Summary Table    Full Report

Fall 2007:  Summary Report/Table    Full Report

The University of Dayton participated in the International Student Barometer (ISB), the largest study of international students in the world with feedback from over 250,000 students over the last three years. The ISB allows UD to benchmark itself against other universities in the United States such as Penn State and the University of Cincinnati, as well as universities from other areas of the world including the London School of Economics, University of Aberdeen, and Imperial College London.

UD respondents included undergraduate and graduate students, and students in UD's Intensive English Program, and exchange students. UD consistently ranked number one in the areas found in four main categories: learning services, living services, support services, and arrival services.
